A Year in Review

 A Year in Review

A few reflections as the year 2020 comes to a close. This past year began with immense promise and abundant hope. The economy was strong, consumer confidence was high, businesses for the most part were booming, and all seemed to be well. However, as is the case, life threw some unexpected twists and turns into the mix. I do not need to belabor or spend much time discussing what we’ve all been trudging through these past eight months. We’ve all felt the struggle and are now anxiously awaiting the new year and what it will bring with it.

So, how did your commercial real estate brokerage handle the challenges of 2020?

Were you an ostrich? Burying your head in the sand, waiting for it all to go away? Or were you a bull? Did you face this year’s obstacles head on, put your nose to the grindstone, and ferociously represent your clients and customers so they can achieve their goals, despite these difficult circumstances?

In my (humble) opinion, those were the only two options for CRE professionals this year. Some brokers are having the best year of their careers while others have struggled to maintain balance through 2020’s turbulence.

I know some of us want to put 2020 in the rearview with the hopes that 2021 will magically heal the hurt we felt this year, but I do not share that optimism.

The take away from 2020, again in my opinion, is that hard work, fierce dedication, perseverance, and a little bit of good luck goes a long way, especially in tough times. Human beings are resilient and we have the ability to weather life’s storms, even this one.

So, if you took the last eight months off hoping things would get better, I would invite you to begin anew in 2021. Go to work with a new sense of purpose, a new desire to serve your clients and customers. You will be surprised what will flow your way!
